University of Toronto Graduation Portraits — Celebrating an Architecture Graduate

This Is Not a Passport Photo

Graduation portraits should never feel like a trip to Service Canada. This is one of the most significant moments of your life and it deserves to be treated that way. Years of hard work, late nights, and personal growth all led to this. The photos should show that.

Earlier this spring I had the privilege of photographing a University of Toronto Architecture graduate from the Class of 2025. To respect her privacy I will simply call her our grad. What made this session so memorable was that her mother flew in from the United States just to be there for it. That kind of love and pride? It absolutely needed to be captured too.

The Session

We started where it made the most sense: on campus. The Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design at U of T is one of the most stunning buildings in Toronto and the perfect backdrop for someone who spent years studying within its walls. We explored several beautiful spots throughout the building, letting the space reflect her story and the years she invested there.

On a separate day, we to my studio in Willowdale for something a little more intimate. Our grad's mother had completely fallen in love with the studio space and we decided on the spot to do a fully customized mommy and me session together. Those portraits of the two of them, a mother who had just crossed a border to cheer on her daughter, turned out to be some of the most touching images of the entire week.

What Graduation Portraits Are Really For

I always say that a great graduation portrait works on two levels. It is a personal keepsake that freezes a moment your family will treasure forever. And it is also a professional image you will actually want to use, whether that means framing it for your parents, sharing it at a celebration, or putting it on LinkedIn as you step into your career.

That last point matters more than people realize. First impressions in the professional world happen fast and a strong portrait makes a difference. This is exactly why I welcome graduates back to the studio for professional headshots as part of the full experience. Because the chapter you are walking into deserves just as much attention as the one you just completed.
